Now housed at the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, Italy, this iconic masterpiece by the Italian master, Leonardo da Vinci is often seen as the perfect marriage of art, mathematics & science, something that was emblematic of the Renaissance era in general but encapsulated to absolute perfection here. Vitruvius was a Roman author, architect and engineer who saw the symmetry of the human body to reflect general symmetry in the universe, proposing his description of what a perfectly proportioned human being would resemble. Taking upon that description, da Vinci’s drawing depicts this man in two separate positions, perfectly enclosed within a square and a circle as Vitrivius had described. However, da Vinci made notable adjustments to his version and further refined what Vitruvius had initially conceptualized, emphasizing da Vinci’s unquestionable brilliance as an artist and scientist.
