Satyajit Ray (1921-1992) was an Indian writer, director, illustrator and composer and is often considered the greatest Indian filmmaker of all time. Ray shot to prominence with his debut film Pather Panchali (1955) which was awarded at eleven international festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival and is frequently cited as one of the best films of all time. He has had an illustrious career, with countless prestigious awards and his films have been hailed for their stark realism, championing the societal underdog and for often underlining intense struggle with uplifting messages of hope.
