Princess Diana (1961-1997) was a member of the British Royal family. Lovingly called the “People’s Princess”, Diana was exceptionally popular among her people for defying numerous traditional roles & expectations forced upon her as a royal. She empathized and related more with the common man, working as a Kindergarten Teacher, sending her children to public school and being exceptionally frank about her often tumultuous personal life with the press and public. She was a tireless activist, dedicating most of her time to charity work, most famous for removing the stigma around AIDS by shaking hands with an HIV Positive patient when very little was known of the disease. She also famously walked through an entire partially cleared minefield to raise awareness about landmines left from past warfare and began numerous charities across Africa, mainly focused on children. Fiercely individualistic, she was also a celebrated fashion icon of the 90s, often experimenting with her wardrobe at incredibly formal events and royal obligations, veering between low-cut dresses and even suits like all the men in her family. Her untimely death left a gaping hole in popular culture, taking away one of the world’s most popular, beloved and cherished celebrities and public figures to have ever existed.
