Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) was a Polish astronomer, mathematician and clergyman who proposed a heliocentric model of the universe, placing the Sun at the center rather than the Earth. His seminal work, On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres (1543), is widely seen as the originator of modern astronomy and the very first spark that began the Scientific Revolution in the Renaissance era.
