Now in The National Gallery, London. This painting is a Dutch Renaissance masterpiece and considered one of the most original & significant works in Western Art. It was bought in 1842 by The National Gallery for £600 ($88,320, inflation adjusted). Presumed to depict the Italian merchant Giovanni Arnolfini and his wife, many believe this to be a marriage contract captured uniquely in the form of a painting. Its complex iconography, lighting and perspective make it a defining work of its era.
