Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was a South African revolutionary, political leader and philanthropist who served as his country’s President from 1994-1999. Mandela was one of the leading anti-apartheid activists in South Africa and served 27 years in jail for attempting to overthrow the government. Upon release he fought in the country’s first democratic election and became the first black head of state, focusing on eradicating racial inequalities and uplifting South Africa socially and economically during his tenure. His legendary ascent from prisoner to president and outspoken, but gentle demeanor have made him an icon of the 20th century and an inspiration to many fighting for equality around the world today.
